About Us

In 1889 Amos William Howard discovered subterranean clover growing naturally in the Adelaide Hills. Triggering a major contribution to the increase in pasture productivity, the seeding of 'Howard' and 'Mt. Barker' clovers became widespread throughout rural Australia. A thriving clover seed industry continues to this day.

Howard Vineyard and Cellar Door now occupy the site of his discovery.

Established in the late 1990's, the Howard Vineyard group owns two vineyards in the Adelaide Hills and is one of the largest independant suppliers of premium Adelaide Hills grapes.

The Howard Vineyard of 24 hectares lies between Nairne, Littlehampton and Mt Barker. With an elevation of 360-400 metres, the slightly warmer aspect provides perfect conditions for our cool climate red varieties of Shiraz, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, and also provides quality Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Chardonnay grapes.

The Schoenthal Vineyard, consisting of 36 hectares near Lobethal, provides an excellent site for Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. The elevation of 440-500 metres ensures a cool autumn for the ideal ripening of these varieties.

The Howard Vineyard wine brand was established in 2005 and the Cellar Door opened in November 2006. Grapes from selected blocks of both of our vineyards are used to make our wines. Winemaking is carried out by Michael Sykes with Mark Swann providing additional oenological advice.
