2024 Howard Vineyard Sangiovese

Sangiovese:  A dry, light to medium-bodied red wine that tips towards higher levels of mouth-watering acidity and tighter tannins.

The rich flavours range from rustic to fruity, depending on where and how the vines are managed. For fruit, expect cherry, plum, and red currant, as well as smoky and earthy herbaceousness.  The grapes can exhibit savory characteristics like spicy oak-induced nuances, peppery tones, and even streaks of sweet tobacco. Black tea can also dominate the palate. On the nose, sangiovese can exhibit spice, dark fruit, and oak.

Vineyard:  Spring Hill Vineyard, Macclesfield.  Elevation and Aspect, 249 to 489 metres above sea level.

Winemaking: Harvested across 2 nights for two types of Sangiovese clones the grapes were kept seperate and fermented in 5t open top stainless steel fermenters. The grapes were cold soaked, hand plunged over 9 days and pressed into seasoned French. The wine remained in 500L barrels for 4 months then bottled with minimal SO2. This wine is meant to be enjoyed early and even from the fridge.

"Two clones harvested across two passes. Macerated for nine days before maturation in 500L French wood for four months. Sour cherry, dried herb and a vanillin waft of oak licked with menthol. This wine has a nice levity to it, with sangiovese's fibrous burr of tannins and crunchy acidity cleaning up any excess while promoting the second glass."
